ABOUT OUR FOUNDATION

Advocating Change and Making a Difference in the struggle against Divisiveness, Hatred and Bullying!

Inspired by a life-changing event, Dr. Bowie, BC Bowie Scholarship Foundation was established in 1997 by Barbara Bowie and received our 501c3 status in 2001 in San Antonio, Tx. Barbara, Former City Councilperson for Kirby/San Antonio, Retired Social Worker/Nurse, Counselor and Published Poet/Writer, started out with a Poetry Venue that attracted youth by giving them an outlet for expressing their thoughts, feelings and frustrations. After hearing their stories of abuse, incest, Bullying and racism, Barbara knew that her mission was to provide this outlet, specifically for young people to have a safe and loving environment for expressing their feelings. The "Arts & Academics in Focus" performing arts after school and summer program was established in 1997. Barbara's husband, Dr. Jesse Bowie, joined with her in 1998, offering a program that made it easier for youth to grasp an understanding of Math and Science. He passed away, suddenly, in 1999. The Foundation was renamed in his honor and we continued with the inclusion of Academics with the Performing Arts. Over the years, we have become one of the most trusted and effective charitable foundations, working hard to improve the lives of the youth we serve and their families. Here you can learn more about who we are and what we do.

Special Comendations

  • DAVID GUNN CEO KNIGHT FURNITURE

My name is David Gunn, and I am a local small business owner. It has been my pleasure to first learn about and then become invlolved in the Freedom Riders event that the Bowie Foundation is creating for Sherman Texas. In the thirty plus years that I have been active in Sherman I have never seen an event like this one. I pray that you will consider providing all of the financial assistance possible to help us make this a meaningful event. One that is so important to all of our community, one that has drawn support from people of all demographics, and one that is about uniting our community in a very positive way.

    Carver Community Cultural Center

In 1996 the Foundation partnered with the Carver for their first performing arts after school program and this Foundation has continued implementing yearly programs in different schools, community centers, theaters and other facilities.

Several youths have benefited from Dr. Bowie Scholarship Foundation through Mrs. Bowie's unending efforts. Some of these youths, now in their twenties, give back to the community by participating in various musical productions or volunteering as mentors

  • ALMA SMITH YWCA CEO

The YWCA San Antonio partnered with the Dr Bowie Foundation from 2000 to 2005 in the Arts in Focus Program.

Together we enhanced the lives of many children as they became involved in artistic endeavors.

Barbara bowie inspires community residents to come together for the sake of our children. It is amazing to watch them learn what they can accomplish as they work together to perform a play or musical exhibition.

The Dr. Bowie Foundation accomplishes so much with limited resources.

  • REV. DR. CHARLES LESLIE

Ms. Bowie is All about Community! She has a gift of bringing people together. With  her warm and winsome personality, she makes you feel welcome. I saw her turn ideas into action, with the opening of a Coffee Shop with a Purpose.  There is no doubt she will make a difference.

For four months I saw her bring people together from Austin College, Grayson College, the city of Sherman, Shermans Chamber of Commerce, Denison High School, Sugar Bear Catering, Schulman's Movie Bowl Grille and the Holiday Inn. All of these establishments were lined up to bring in the original Mississippi Freedom Riders and the Temptations. Please endorse and support this worthy organization as I do!
